- Senator Lummis claimed that the Senate included the CLARITY Act in the remaining calendar dates leading to the August recess.
Sentiment around the possible approval of the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act is now at an all-time low on Polymarket. Kalshi also reflects the same uncertainty.
Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Republican from Wyoming, admitted that the pending bill to regulate the crypto market is in a race against time, with Congress having only a week left before the August recess. However, she is not giving up her commitment to the CLARITY Act without a fight.
Jam-Packed Final Week Before August Recess
In an interview with the Crypto in America team, Lummis confirmed that there’s a lot to squeeze in the final week of session before the upcoming recess. She explained that they have to settle pending nominations, resolution votes, sanction votes on Iran and Russia, and other important matters on the Senate agenda.
Nonetheless, Lummis revealed that Majority Leader Senator John Thune has “kept a place” for the CLARITY Act before the long legislative break. She believes that her colleague intends to push for a vote on the bill before the recess. The senator hinted that the Senate floor will likely tackle the pending legislation this Friday or until Tuesday next week.
Lummis enumerated the hurdles the CLARITY Act has to clear before a vote. First, it must pass through a motion to proceed. Following that, it must enter a cloture and final passage if there are no more amendments to its provisions.
The senator stated that it’s hard to squeeze everything, given the limited time left. But then again, she highlighted that it’s possible.
Things Holding Back the CLARITY Act
When pressed about the issues delaying passage of the CLARITY Act, Lummis blamed it on her colleagues in the Democratic Party. She claimed that despite having 11 months to work on the bill, they continue to push back at every step. The compromises between the Republican and Democratic Party lawmakers led to the legislation growing from around 300 pages to almost 700 pages in its current version.
Lummis noted that the new language of the CLARITY Act offers comprehensive safeguards for decentralized finance (DeFi) and provisions against illicit finance. She called its present form “very pro law enforcement.” Additionally, she emphasized that they already patched up the legislation’s ethics issues after the White House agreed to a compromise.
For the senator, the only problem the Democrats have is their hatred for President Donald Trump, who only wants to secure America’s dominance in digital assets and the future of finance. She indicated that the hold-up is all about politics at this rate.
Lummis didn’t say definitely whether the CLARITY Act already has the required 60 votes to pass. Still, she urged further dialogue with opposition members to iron out the bill’s sticky elements as early as possible.
